Revolutionizing Mental Health:

Our Care Model

Our Care Model stands at the forefront of innovation, created through a collaboration between youth, community partners, and seasoned therapists. Driven by a profound understanding of the challenges facing today’s youth, we’ve reimagined mental health support to be strengths-based, accessible, engaging, and effective.

"My life's mission is to change the mental health landscape for youth, so they can thrive."

- Meagan Butler, LPC, Chief Care Model Officer

Why We Created It?

After leading mental health crisis response efforts in a school district of 75,000 children, Meagan Butler, LPC, felt that the status quo needed to be changed. There weren’t enough therapists to provide individual long-term support, quality care was prohibitively expensive, and youth were disengaged. After life-changing experiences as a therapist in the Uvalde Love Project, Meagan saw the power of community connection and a strengths-based approach, which are now key components of Lucero’s Care Model.

At Lucero, we started with the people most impacted–the youth themselves–and we listened to them. We believe that the highest quality mental health care should be embedded where you live, learn, and play, and with people who have been through your shared experiences.

We are deeply committed to ensuring that vital mental health resources are readily accessible to the youth who need it most. Through innovative solutions and strategic partnerships, we strive to break down barriers and expand access to high-quality care, empowering young individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. Our unwavering dedication to this mission drives every aspect of our work, as we relentlessly pursue equitable and inclusive mental health support for all youth.

A Connected Community, Led by Youth

In order for youth to thrive, they need to be connected and supported. Inspired by Healing Centered Engagement and Positive Youth Development frameworks, Lucero’s Connection platform creates a caring crew that surrounds the tween or teen with radical support. We believe that collective trauma necessitates collective healing, and that youth have the vision to lead the way. Youth are encouraged not only to learn how to feel better, but also to dream. Caregivers and friends stay connected and make positive changes together.

The Science Behind It

Grounded in evidence-based practices including DBT Strategies, CBT strategies, Trauma informed care, and applied neuroscience, our model provides comprehensive support tailored to each individual's needs.

DBT Strategies (Dialectical Behavior Therapy)

DBT is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that emphasizes the development of skills. It includes techniques such as mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance skills to help individuals cope with intense emotions and improve their overall well-being.

CBT Strategies (Cognitive Behavior Therapy)

CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach focused on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to mental health issues.

It involves techniques such as cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and problem-solving skills to address a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Trauma-informed Care

Trauma-informed care is an approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma on individuals’ lives and emphasizes creating safe and supportive environments for healing.

It involves understanding the effects of trauma on physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, as well as incorporating trauma-sensitive practices and interventions to promote recovery and resilience.

Applied Neuroscience

Applied neuroscience involves the application of scientific findings from neuroscience research to inform therapeutic interventions and mental health practices.

It encompasses understanding brain function, neural pathways, and neuroplasticity to develop targeted interventions that support cognitive, emotional, and behavioral well-being.

Regulation Strategies

Regulation strategies refer to techniques and interventions aimed at promoting emotional regulation and self-regulation skills. These strategies may include mindfulness practices, relaxation techniques, sensory modulation, and self-soothing activities to help individuals manage stress, regulate emotions, and maintain a sense of balance and control.

By integrating these evidence-based tools into the care model, we provide comprehensive and effective support for youth, addressing a wide range of mental health needs and empowering them to thrive.

Gamification Approach

By infusing gamification principles, we ignite motivation and empower youth with voice and choice, fostering sustained engagement in their well-being journey. Designed to intervene at the optimal age when youth brains are highly malleable, our Care Model paves the way for a brighter, healthier future.

Focus on Strengths

We say to youth, “You are more than the worst thing that ever happened to you.” Instead of focusing on symptoms and what’s going wrong, we choose to focus on strengths. Our personalized game-based platform is highly engaging and gives youth the voice and choice they asked us for.

Optimal Age for Intervention

Intervening at the optimal age when youth brains are highly malleable holds immense significance in promoting long-term mental well-being and preventing the onset of mental health conditions. During adolescence, the brain undergoes significant development, particularly in regions responsible for emotional regulation, decision-making, and social behavior. This period of neuroplasticity presents a unique opportunity to shape neural pathways and behaviors, making it an ideal time for targeted interventions.

By adopting a proactive approach to mental health care, the Lucero Care Model seeks to empower youth with the skills and resources they need to navigate life's challenges effectively. Lucero is different because we decided to collaborate with youth to design solutions that work for them. By equipping them with tools for self-awareness, emotional regulation, and stress management, we aim to promote resilience and well-being, ultimately setting the stage for a healthier and more fulfilling future.
